Flash Question Session
Right now I’m in a lull between books. I just released two back to back: Go Publish Yourself ( Quick and Dirty tips for Successful Self-Publishing) and Soulstone (Book 4, Immortalis series). Between promotion and life with a newborn, my time is stretched pretty thin. When I do find a few moments, I’m hoping to work on more of my Romantic shorts like House of Immortal Pleasures and Karma & Melodies. Eventually I’ll get back to my literary baby, the Immortalis Series and work on book 5, but I’m not really sure when I’ll be able to really devote the time needed for that one.
2. How do you balance being a writer and the demands of life?
Oh, I wish I knew how to do that “balance” thing. I’m constantly burning the candle at both ends. My day starts at 7am with the kids and ends sometime around 1am with trying to catch up on writing. In between is a free for all of random events. Most of my lack of balance is due to the new addition in our family. I’m sure once he’s a little older and on a real sleep schedule I’ll be able to better schedule out my writing and family stuff. Until then, I’ll enjoy the chaos.
3. Favorite candy from childhood?
Remember those wax bottles with the liquid inside? No, they’re not my favorite but whenever I think back to childhood, those are the first things I remember. They were so weird but addictive. That and wax lips too. LoL. I always liked the oddball things. As for favorites, I’d have to say the sour redvines. I’m not sure they still make those, but when I was little, I remember buying them at the corner store. They were huge and super sour. I loved them.
4. Which author has inspired you the most and why?
It’s really hard to pick just one. But I guess I have to start with the first one to capture my love of vampires (since vampires are the primary monster I write about). Anne Rice and her Vampire Chronicles were my first real vampire series. I was in my early teens when I first picked up her books, and it was not long after that I had the entire series devoured and wanted more. I think in a way I model my vampires after hers. They are the most human monsters you’ll find and they sometimes make you question how monstrous humanity really is.
5. What advice to other authors would you say helped you the most?
Don’t edit a first draft! It sounds simple enough, but I bet most of you out there will nod your heads while reading this. It’s the one thing that will stop a first draft in its tracks. First drafts are supposed to suck. Let them suck until you have them completed. If you try to edit the “suck” out of them before you complete them you’ll end up in a constant editing loop. Instead of completing your work, you never actually finish it. So, like I said, simple advice but it’s probably the most helpful I’ve ever been given.
6. Name one thing you wish you did differently in your stories.
Hmm. That’s a really tough question. I can’t really say that I would change anything. There are characters I was sad to see go, and situations that kind of sucked for the main character, but they all add up. It’s the butterfly effect. You know, a butterfly flaps its wings and somewhere on the other side of the world it’s linked to a hurricane? If I changed one thing in my main character’s past it would affect her future.
7. Do you see yourself in any of your characters?
Sure, there is a little of me in all the characters. Alyssa has my stubbornness. Rozaline has my mothering instincts. Nicholas has my inner need to be snarky. LoL. They all have some small part but each character has grown through the series and really has their own personalities.
8. What made you want to be a writer?
I’ve always loved to write, so I think there has always been the desire. I just hadn’t realized it fully until a few years ago. Writing allows me to create characters and worlds and then share them with everyone. The best part is getting feedback from others. I love it when a reader comes back to tell me how much they enjoyed one of my stories. It makes me that much more excited to write more.
9. Will there be another book in the Immortalis series?
I do have some ideas for book 5, but I have not begun to write it yet. Back to that whole “balance” question. I haven’t quite gotten it down, so it might be a little while before I get back to the series.
10. Where can we stalk you online?
