AUTHOR BIO:

“I used to be a full time teacher (11-13 year olds) then I became a full time mother. During that time I also found my passion for writing. Over the last ten years I have been studying the craft and putting myself out there.

My first trilogy came out in November, 2011. It has been a wild ride swimming in this indie river and I have loved so much of it. I have learned so many amazing things and met so many great people. It has totally solidified the fact I want to be a writer for as long as I possibly can!

I now have five books published and am working on a new YA Fantasy trilogy for 2013. I am having so much fun with it and can't wait to share it with everybody.

I am from New Zealand, but am currently living in China with my husband and two sons. It has been a culture shock, but it's pretty cool living in such a different country.” ~Melissa Pearl

Book Review: Sia by Josh Grayson

ARC Review of
Sia
 by
Josh Grayson
Available 11/20/13

Blurb:
When seventeen-year-old Sia wakes up on a park bench, she has no idea who or where she is. Yet after a week of being homeless, she’s reunited with her family. At school, she’s powerful and popular. At home, she’s wealthy beyond her dreams. But she quickly realizes her perfect life is a lie. Her family is falling apart and her friends are snobby, cruel and plastic. Worse yet, she discovers she was the cruelest one. Mortified by her past, she embarks on a journey of redemption and falls for Kyle, the “geek” she once tormented. Yet all the time she wonders if, when her memories return, she’ll become the bully she was before…and if she’ll lose Kyle.

My Review of 'Sia'
A heartwarming story which thoroughly surprised me, I just wasn’t expecting it. From the beginning, I thought it was going to be full of high school drama stuff like a ‘Mean Girls’ scenario, but that played just a minor role in the book. The little insights it had on homelessness, true friendships, and changing one’s life to better themselves, were awesome. The main character, Sia Holloway, was extremely likeable, even after discovering her treacherous past.

Sia Holloway finds herself on the streets of L.A., lost with no memories of anything about herself or where she belongs. Deciding to not go to the cops about it, fully paranoid that it’d bring nothing but trouble, she resorts to homelessness, discovering some hard lessons about life on the streets. After being attacked by a man whose intentions were not so noble, she meets Carol, a homeless lady who takes her under her wing and shows her the ropes of surviving this cruel world. But soon after, Sia gets hit by a car following a strange run in with a mysterious boy, sending her back into her life as a spoiled rich girl who ruled her high school with cutting words and an iron fist.

I liked how Sia discovered what a terrible person she used to be and how the ‘new’ Sia is very much a saint. She knows she’s wronged people and knows she’s not that person anymore. Even though her best friends Amber and Stacy shun her, and her quarterback boyfriend Duke doesn’t understand this new side of her, she continues to want to be better than she used to be, not just for herself, but her family and the new amazing friends she acquires along the way. She hopes her old self won’t come pouncing back in, especially when she’s around the cute bakery boy named Kyle, who sets her heart fluttering. Together with Kyle, she discovers a new calling that makes her a braver, more giving and happier girl.

I enjoyed this story very much. It’s an easy young adult read that keeps you wondering what will happen to Sia next. She turns out to be a very charming girl, even with all her quirks. It’s impossible not to like her. Through her amnesia and her struggles, I found myself rooting for her the whole way through, hoping that even through adversity, she doesn’t return to being the monster of her past. I especially liked her homeless friend Carol, who was wise and always helpful. She was a ripple of sunshine for sure.

A heartwarming, sometimes tear jerking story that reignites one’s faith in humanity. An excellent debut!

Review: Shooting Scars by Karina Halle

Shooting Scars (The Artist Trilogy #2)
by
Karina Halle

Blurb:
Sometimes the right choice can be the deadliest.

When Ellie Watt made the ultimate sacrifice for Camden McQueen, she never thought it would be easy. But walking away with her ex-lover, Javier Bernal, in order to ensure Camden’s safety has brought a whole new set of dangers. With Javier’s plans for Ellie growing more secretive by the moment, Ellie must find a way to stay ahead of the game before her past swallows her whole.

Meanwhile, Camden’s new life is short-lived. Fueled by revenge and pursued by authorities, he teams up with an unlikely partner in order to save Ellie. But as Camden toes the line between love and retribution, he realizes that in order to get back the woman he loves, he may have to lose himself in the process. He might just turn into the very man he’s hunting.

Told in dual POV from Camden and Ellie.

My Review:
5 stars hands down!
Oh my goodness! **Spoiler Alert** Another flippin' cliffhanger! *** End Spoiler*** Ms. Halle loves to torture a reader and keep them on the edge of their seats, while also wanting to fling the kindle out the window. The horror of it all!

Okay back to the book. Loved it. I've never read too many romantic suspense thrillers, just because I don't find many that catch my attention. This series did and it's definitely a unique fusion of all three. You definitely have to read Book 1 and the Prequel before indulging in this rollercoaster ride. I still find Book 1 as my favorite, but this was an epic follow-up. Read them, believe me, it's worth every second of your time.

It continues off book 1 and follows Ellie Watt, who's now in Javier Bernal's clutches. He's her ex-boyfriend who viciously ripped her heart out and slapped it back in with holes a plenty. Well it's been six years, people do get over things like that right? He's not there for love though (or is he?), and Ellie is horrified when she realizes what he needs her for just might be the answer to what has her all messed up. But what's the price on shattered hearts these days? And, in leaving with Javier, she's also left behind her new love, Camden McQueen. He's got his child and ex-wife to take care of, but things are never what they appear to be when Ellie Watt is involved. `Tis the life of a Con Artist right?

A tumultuous ride through the lives of three epically messed up souls who bring to each other more than any of them can imagine. If you haven't read Ms. Halle's work, what are you waiting for? This series is amazing! Full of love, thrills, emotional hang-ups and of course....there will be blood.

Thank you so much to the author and the publisher for letting me read this eARC for an honest review.

Read the Prequel and Book 1 of The Artists Trilogy:

Author Bio:

The daughter of a Norwegian Viking and a Finnish Moomin, Karina Halle grew up in Vancouver, Canada with trolls and eternal darkness on the brain. This soon turned into a love of all things that go bump in the night and a rather sadistic appreciation for freaking people out. Like many of the flawed characters she writes, Karina never knew where to find herself and has dabbled in acting, make-up artistry, film production, screenwriting, photography, travel writing and music journalism. She eventually found herself in the pages of the very novels she wrote (if only she had looked there to begin with).

Karina holds a screenwriting degree from Vancouver Film School and a Bachelor of Journalism from TRU. Her travel writing, music reviews/interviews and photography have appeared in publications such as Consequence of Sound, Mxdwn and GoNomad Travel Guides. She currently splits her time between her apartment in downtown Vancouver and her sailboat, where a book and a bottle of wine are always at hand.

Darkhouse is her first novel and the first one in the Experiment in Terror Series. Things only get better from here on in.

On Every Street by Karina Halle Review Feature!

On Every Street
by
Karina Halle
Blurb:
When young con artist Ellie Watt decides to call herself Eden White and go after the drug lord who ruined her as a child, she never expects to fall for one of his henchmen. But Javier Bernal is no ordinary man. Subtly dangerous and overwhelmingly seductive, Eden finds herself passionately in love with Javier, the very person she's set-up to betray. With her body and heart in a heated battle against her deep need for revenge, no one will walk away from this con a winner.

This 50K word (100+ pages) novella takes place six years before Sins & Needles. It can be read before or after Sins & Needles and may also be read as a standalone

My Review
Wow, Ms. Halle never fails to impress. This story is no exception. She is the master of emotional shake ups, which twist your mind until the reader does not know whether to scream, riot or bawl their bloody eyes out.

She wasn’t kidding about this being a hard book to write; it feels equally earth shattering to read.

This is a prequel to her novel Sins & Needles, giving us the what, where, how, when and why of Ellie Watts and her ex-boyfriend Javier’s relationship prior to that novel. For all the Javier haters, On Every Street may change your perspective on the Latin hunk.

With writing that cuts one to the bone, we follow Ellie on her endless quest for revenge for what she claims ‘ruined’ her at a young age. Changing her name to Eden White and hoping to slip into the inner circle of a notorious mobster named Travis, in a quest for absolution, she finds her target. Javier is the slick, confident and deadly henchman of Travis and is everything Ellie needs to get one step closer to getting justice. Except the relationship she starts with Javier, turns into something unexpected. Will vengeance be worth the wait, or will the beast devour her one chance for something real? Sometimes what a person wants isn’t what they need.

Thrilling! An absolutely riveting tale spun with bone crushing madness and steamy sexiness. I can’t wait for book 2 of this series Shooting Scars. Ms. Halle is a storyteller worth every minute of your time.

Not recommended for under 18 due to sexual situations and mature content.
